11/25/2008 Weather

11/25/2008 Weather Discussion: A cold front passing through the state will bring some light snow to the mountains today. High pressure is expected to build behind this front providing a dry day tomorrow. Long-term models show another weak system moving through on Thursday/Friday with building high pressure once again bringing dry weather to the PNW for the weekend. Forecast from Tuesday 4pm to Wednesday 4am Precipitation .10 in. Water Trace -2 in. Snow Temperatures Low 28 High 34 Winds 0-5 NW Forecast for Wednesday 4am to 4pm Precipitation 0 in. Water 0 in. Snow Temperatures Low 28 High 32 Winds 5-15 E TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Light snow today, drying after midnight – dry Wednesday and most of Thurs. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will be hover between 4 and 5K. East flow will keep surface temps low through tomorrow. A warming trend is expected for Thursday. Winds: Light NW wind will swing north then E tomorrow. Some brisk east winds are possible as gradients strengthen west of the crest.

11/19/2008 Weather

11/19/2008 Weather Discussion: Two distinct storms are tracking toward the PNW. We should begin to feel the effects of the first tomorrow and then again on Friday night/Saturday. These storms have the potential to drop some wet heavy snow on the mountains by the weekend. Long-term models have a lot of inconsistency in them so I have low confidence on what will happen after the weekend. Stay tuned. Forecast from Wednesday 4pm Thursday 4am Precipitation Lt .10 in. Water trace in. Snow Temperatures Low 30 High 34 Winds 5-10 E Forecast for Thursday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .25 in. Water 2-4 in. Snow Temperatures Low 28 High 32 Winds 5-10 W/SW TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: The main push of moisture should reach the mountains around mid day tomorrow and increase later in the evening. The precipitation could start out as rain but is expected to turn to snow after 4pm. Snow should taper off early Friday morning with some lingering showers. The next similar system is currently timing out to arrive later Friday night or early Saturday morning. Freezing levels: The temps will be the decider through this. Freezing levels are expected to drop to 4000’ by tomorrow afternoon and then drop to 3500’ over night. A repeat of this pattern is expected with Friday’s system (warm to start then cooling) Winds: Strengthening *east winds are expected to remain in place until the front officially passes sometime tomorrow. Winds will then shift to a westerly flow. This pattern will repeat itself on Friday/Saturday. Models are showing some potential for some windy periods associated with these storms. *Fun weather fact: East flow - there are 3 main things that make wind. Temperature changes, pressure differences and the spin of the earth. (Coriolis effect) When there is high pressure east of the Cascade crest and low pressure to the west, wind will move from high pressure to low pressure thus producing east flow through the Pass. East flow can save us from the rain monster by drawing cool air from the east and lower surface temps – This may be the case tomorrow.

11/18/2008 Weather

11/18/2008 Weather Discussion: This benign weather, with the addition of a little sun, will last through tomorrow. A strong cold front is approaching the PNW for Thursday. Long-term models show the next system reaching the mountains sometime Thursday morning. Currently freezing levels are expected to drop to around 4000’ with a nice dose of moisture in tow. This storm should last into Friday - Beyond that the models are in conflict so I will leave that for when confidence is higher. Forecast from Tuesday 4pm to Wednesday 4am Precipitation 0 in. Water 0 in. Snow Temperatures Low 30 High 44 Winds 0-5 E Forecast for Wednesday 4am to 4pm Precipitation 0 in. Water 0 in. Snow Temperatures Low 30 High 40 Winds 5-10 E TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: No significant precipitation expected until Thursday. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will remain above 5000’ through Wednesday night. Temps will begin to drop with the arrival of Thursday front. Surface temps will be slightly lower due to east flow influence. Winds: East flow will develop tonight and strengthen through tomorrow.

11/17/2008 Weather

11/17/2008 Weather Discussion: One more nice day before a slow change in our pattern takes shape through the week. A slow moving cold front will lower temps tonight and bring a small chance of moisture with it for tomorrow. Long-term models are currently showing the next chance of any significant moisture arriving early Thursday morning – this is a bit far out to have much confidence in the details, but for now it is looking cool and wet. Forecast from Monday 4pm to Tuesday 4am Precipitation 0 in. Water 0 in. Snow Temperatures Low 34 High 50 Winds 0-5SW Forecast for Wednesday 4am to 4pm Precipitation Lt .10 in. Water 0 in. Snow Temperatures Low 30 High 38 Winds 0-5 W TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Dry today. A very small chance of some rain expected tomorrow but should be light and brief. Dry for Wednesday. Freezing levels: The freezing level is expected to reach 10k today before the cold front drops it to 5000’ tomorrow. Winds: Light SW flow should swing to a westerly influence behind the approaching front. East flow developing Wednesday.
