Close call in the Bridger Range

The Bridger Range:

Yesterday morning at 11 a.m. a person triggered a large avalanche on Saddle Peak. Extreme luck was involved as no one was caught. A cornice the size of a VW van broke as a skier walked towards the edge of the ridge at the summit. The block slid downhill and triggered the avalanche. It broke 3-6 feet deep and went 1,000+ feet wide wiping out hundreds of ski tracks from Monday. A powder cloud was seen by most people at the ski area. Our Photos page of the website is filled with pictures which are more vivid than my words can describe.

Start Time Thursday---7:30am

February 16, 2010

Start Time Wednesday---7:30am

Diurnal Pattern

Jack's asked if we were going to go into a  "diurnal" pattern.

Fancy word for a 24 hour period.  Diuranl pertains to actions or events that occur during a twenty-four hour cycle or recurs every twenty-four hours. Meteorological elements that are measured diurnally include clouds, precipitation, pressure, relative humidity, temperature, and wind.

In snow terms that translates to melf- freeze cycle - watch for that potential this week.

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

2/16/2010 Weather

Short term: The leading edge of a cold front is now east of the mountains. This will turn off the snow and bring cooling temperatures.

Long-term: Off shore flow combined with a building ridge of high pressure will bring a dry, cool and sunny week ahead.

24 hour Forecast Starting at NOON on Tuesday
Precipitation

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: Other than a few lingering snow showers the snow is pretty much done. The atmosphere will begin to stabilize and clear through the night.

Freezing levels: Freezing levels will fall to 3000’ in the wake of the cold front this afternoon. Freezing levels will continue to slowly fall through the week. Look for a diurnal temperatures cycle to begin with clear cool nights and sunny days.

Winds: Westerlies will switch to easterly overnight. Off shore/east flow will dominate the flow pattern for the rest of the week. JDM

A word about east flow

You have to put your brain in 3D when thinking of east flow.  East flow is driven by pressure.  Temperature changes through a horizontal plane and a vertical plane effect and are effected by pressure.  When there is higher pressure east of the crest and lower pressure west of the crest you get east flow.   Air trapped in the easter basin gets pulled up and west when these pressure differences occur.   Throw in terrain induced flow patterns and it gets interesting.   Air pulled up through the Stevens Pass gap cools as it rises, mix that with cool air aloft in the Northeast portion of the state- walla snow with 4-5000' freezing levels.   That probable confused you as much as it did me.

Should be fun skiing, no matter what!

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

2/9/2010 Weather

Short term: Surface clouds will continue to be pulled through from the east today, but the sun should be shining strong on the ridge.

Long-term: An active weather pattern will begin tomorrow as the northern jet stream drives a series of disturbances into the PNW. Freezing levels going up and down, snow changing to rain and then back to snow will be the game through the weekend.

Nice to have a few inches of new snow!!!

mm5 540 line model

Notice the 540 line in eastern Washington

A word about Thickness and Pressure

Drew and I were talking about 540hPa line in the MM5 thickness model - Had to go and do some research.

THICKNESS: The difference in height between two atmospheric pressure levels. The thickness is directly related to the average temperature in the column of air between the pressure levels (thus, higher thicknesses typically mean warmer temperatures). The most common thickness used is for the 1000-500mb layer.  At Stevens Pass's elevation, it is best to look at other thickness layers such as 1000-850 mb layer.  Mainly the 540 line.

'Thickness' is a measure of how warm or cold a layer of the atmosphere is, usually a layer in the lowest 5 km of the troposphere; high values mean warm air, and low values mean cold air.  The 500-1000 hPa (hydrostatic Pressure also measured in mbar)value is used to define 'bulk' airmass mean temperature.   The 540hpa is the line that seperated cold air from warm air - the freezing level +-4000' .

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

2/5/2010 Weather

Short term: It’s nice to see a few inches of new snow out there. The atmosphere will dry today. We just might get a glimpse of the sun too.

Long-term: The approaching system will split around the PNW. Therefore, we can expect a dry weekend. Next week looks like it will start out dry with a potential for more weak systems moving in for the second part of the week.

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: Snow will taper to showers this morning and then dry up all together. The atmosphere will remain a little unstable, so you might see a snow flurry floating around out there from time to time.

Freezing levels: Our temperature regime will remain the same with freezing levels holding steady around the 3000’- 3500’ level. Some cooler air from the NE is expected to bring lower surface temperature Sunday/Monday.

Winds: Light East flow will continue through the weekend. JDM

Winds: East winds could be gusty at times today as pressure gradients increase west of the crest. East flow will be stuck in place through the weekend. JDM

El Nino Benefits for the NW?

Well that question depends on who, what or where you are.  If you are a Osprey on the Wenatchee River, you have arrived a few weeks early - extra time to spruce up the nest for the kids.   If you are Flowing Dogwood in Seatlle you have your spring leaves already-you might flower to early and not get pollenated, but hey, life is good for now.  If you are a skiier wanting steep and deep powder you may consider going to the California Alpine.   Corey says its awesome.

Stong El Nino for the NW means warmer than normal temperatures and below average precipiation.

On the lunch room computer I put a "Metamorphism" Power Point on the desk top. Hopefully this will help answer some questions what you might be seeing in a snowprofile.  Patty will load the Snow Pro on that computer so when you do a snowprofile you can share with all.
