March 31, 2011

Start time for Friday: 8am, Day Crew Only.

Yes, the models can be way off...
Day crew only for post-deluge clean up in prepartion for full operations on Saturday. The first moring bus will be the only up-hill bus, and the one down bus will be no later than 4:45. It might be earlier if things finish early.
Quite a strom the last couple of days. A few feet of snow, several inches of water, and a bunch of slides.

An impressive storm with a few curve balls.

Its interesting to go back and figure out what was missed.   The models got the precip amounts pretty much spot on.  The freezing levels and winds were a different animal.

Winds:  The 5000' wind models showed direct westerlies above 60knots.  In reality, the winds had a slight SW orientation which must of sheltered Stevens from the higher winds.

Freezing Levels:   I am still pondering how the freezing levels could of been off by  2-3000' for over 36hrs.   My theory - A cooler pocket of air over the North Cascades must of stretched further south than the models indicated.   Its a good lesson;  even in the very short term, the weather models can be very wrong.

3/23/2011 Weather

24HR FORECAST starting at NOON today

Water - <.25  Snow - 1-3
Freezing Levels -  4000'
Winds -  5-15 E gusty

General Discussion: Enjoy the beautiful weather today because snow is back in our future. A low pressure system churning off the coast, will pull bands of moisture and warmer temperatures up from the south during the next few days.

Long-term: The long range forecast models have the approaching systems weakening and breaking apart as they hit land. Therefore, precipitation amounts over the weekend will probably be downgraded. We can still expect bands of passing snow showers to be the weather pattern through the weekend.

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: Today will be mostly dry. A small band of moisture will bring a period of snow early tomorrow morning. Snow showers are expected to increase late tomorrow and into Friday.

Long-term: Weak disturbances will continue to affect the PNW through the week. A more organized system is developing for the weekend that could bring another round of snow to the mountains.

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: Upper level ridging will allow just a few light snow showers to lurk around the Cascade Crest today and tomorrow.

Freezing levels: Freezing levels will stay low through tomorrow. Clearing tonight could allow temperatures to dip into the middle to low teens. Warming will occur tomorrow evening with freezing levels rising to pass level.

Winds: Light westerly flow will shift easterly tomorrow morning. East flow will strengthen tomorrow evening.

Winds - 0-10 E shifting W

General Discussion: Bands of moisture will continue to move through the PNW throughout the weekend.

Long-term: The advertised drying trend, with periodic bands of moisture, is still on track for the upcoming week. It seems that the atmosphere is in its classic chaotic state of trying to figure out what season it wants to be.

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: A moderate to heavy cell of snow is expected to move through the mountains this evening. Snow should quickly taper off around midnight with just spotty showers following tomorrow morning.

Freezing levels: Freezing levels will slowly rise from 3000’ to 4000’ by the end of the weekend.

24HR FORECAST starting at NOON today

Water - .25  Snow 1-3
Freezing levels - 2500'
Winds - 5-10 W

General Discussion: The approaching low pressure system is expected to stall off coast and then drift south. This will spin periodic bands of moisture through the mountain for the remainder of the week.

Long-term: It seems that our storm cycle is coming to and end. A few more disturbances are expected to move through over the next 2-4 days, but for the most part, we will enter a warmer period with fewer chances of significant winter storms.

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: Weak high pressure aloft will slowly bring an end to the snow tonight. Tomorrow will be relatively dry with a few snow showers lingering around the Cascade crest.

Freezing levels: Freezing levels will fall to 2500’ tonight. However, sun breaks will push surface temps into the mid 30’s today and tomorrow. Good night time cooling should also occur with the aid of some clear skies.

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: Light snow showers will continue today. Snow will intensify tonight with the passing of the cold front and strengthening westerly flow aloft. A drying trend will begin tomorrow afternoon and continue through the remainder of the week.

Freezing levels: Freezing levels will also fall with the cold front. Freezing levels will continue to drop tomorrow night and Thursday.

Winds: Today’s east flow will shift westerly tonight. Ridge top winds will once again be strong through the night.

General Discussion: This morning’s radar shows a few snow showers left in the highway 2 convergence pipe. Weak high pressure aloft will bring a break in the snow today with another system arriving tomorrow, and yet again on Sunday/Monday.

Long-term: This pattern will continue with several more fronts tracking toward the PNW through mid week. Long range models are starting to show the jet shifting north, and high pressure off the coast of California beginning to build. If these two features get their way, it will significantly change the pattern and could cast us quickly into spring.

Sunday Morning Coffee Discussion

The early March NW storm track is showing little sign of change.   Long range models continue to show solid cool NW flow with several low pressure systems developing on it tails. One would expect to begin to see "spring like" patterns emerge with the spring equinox just a few weeks away.  But for now, that doesn’t seem to be the case.   However, it is inevitable with the days getting longer and the sun arching higher in the sky, that pattern changes will begin.  So as the month progresses, watch for day time temperature to progressively rise along with High pressure events growing in length and strength.   Enjoy the March powder.

Thurs the 10th forecast model - notice NW oriented isobar and the cold air still well established in the north.  But also notice the high pressure cell in the 4 corners region pushing ridges into the PNW.  Case in point.

Several fast developing low pressure cells will create complex fronts in the PNW through the week.  Watch for spikes in temperatures and periods of heavy snow showers.   Rapid loading and fluctuating temperature trends will create a tricky snowpack. Be careful out there.
