General Discussion: Underestimated snow totals last night by a few inches. There will be great skiing this morning before the heat of the day gets it. Light snow showers will linger over the Cascade Crest today.

Long-term: NW flow will keep unseasonable low temperatures and the chance of showers in the forecast through the weekend. A cool, moist air mass will continue the threat of showers and low temperatures into next week.

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: Passing snow showers will be possible through tomorrow.

STEVENS PASS MOUNTAIN WEATHER

4/14/2011 Weather

24HR FORECAST starting at NOON today

Water - .25  Snow 2-4
Freezing levels - 2500' rising 3500'
Winds 5-10 WSW

General Discussion: A weak front will bring a brief period of moderate snow tonight with just light snow showers expected tomorrow.

Long-term: Weak NW flow will keep the atmosphere unstable through the weekend. Therefore, light snow showers with sun breaks will bring us through the final weekend of operations. The long range outlook is trending toward dryer but still cooler than normal conditions.

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: A quick moving front will bring a period of snow this evening. Snow is expected to quickly taper off after midnight with a few residual snow showers left over tomorrow.

Freezing levels: Freezing levels will bounce between 2500’ and 3500’ a few times during the next few days. Cool temperatures are expected for the weekend.

Winds: Light SW flow will slowly shift easterly tomorrow. There could be a short period of some gusty ridge top winds during early morning hours, other than that, there shouldn’t be much in the wind department.

24HR FORECAST starting at NOON today

Water - .25  Snow - 2-4
Freezing levels -  4000'  falling to 2500'

General Discussion: Radar imagery shows a weak cold front moving through the PNW this morning. This will bring snow to the mountains tonight and tomorrow.

Long-term: Westerly flow will continue to bring a threat of snow to the mountains through the weekend. These systems are not very organized or packing much energy, therefore, just light to moderate snow showers will be likely.

A climate note from the National weather service: “CLIMATE NOTE...THERE HAS NEVER BEEN AN APRIL IN SEATTLE WITH ZERO DAYS OF HIGHS IN THE 60S INCLUDING THE FEDERAL BUILDING RECORDS WHICH GO BACK TO 1891. THE RECORD FOR THE LEAST AMOUNT OF DAYS WITH HIGHS 60 OR GREATER FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL IS 2 DAYS SET IN 1954 AND 1970”. FELTON I think what he is trying to say is that this could go down as the coolest April on record.

TRENDS AND TIMING
Precipitation: Light snow will continue to fall through the night. Snow will increase during the day tomorrow.

Freezing levels: Freezing levels will fall in the wake of the cold front. Freezing levels are expected to remain below pass level for the remainder of the week.

Winds: SW flow aloft will dominate the main wind pattern for the next few days. Short period of east flow will occur from time to time as these fronts move inland. Gusty ridge top winds will be possible as the front move through.
