From Dan Hilden

Big month!

On Feb 1st we had 182", and now we have 342". So that comes out to 160" so far this month. In the last 50 years 98/99 had the only bigger Feb total: 226". In 59/60 they got 227" and in 55/56 they got 166". The records only go back to 51/52.

So we are now in the 2nd snowiest February in over 50 years, and the 4th snowiest on record.

The Snapshot:   Dig out (instead of keep up) time begins today with the end of the snow.  Today will be mostly dry with dissipating clouds.

4-7day Long Range:  Most of the energy tracking toward the PNW late in the week is currently tracking south of the region. Therefore, no significant precipitation is expected for the next 4-7 days for Stevens Pass.  A cold snap will begin on Friday with low temperatures hitting single digits over the weekend.

The Science:  The low pressure system off the western coast will spin one more band of moisture through the PNW today.   A high pressure ridge forming over the interior west will keep most of the moisture confined to the west coast starting tomorrow.   The eastern basin of Washington will also continue to cool down as more cold air streams in from the northeast today and tomorrow.  Wednesday, freezing levels will rise to around 4000’ under southerly flow.

4-7day Long Range:   The end of the week will be mostly dry with the exception a of weak disturbance making its way into the region on Friday.  Another round of cold arctic air arrives over the weekend with unseasonably low temperatures.

MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0900 Sunday

The Snapshot: Poofta, nice a light.  The snow will continue today with low temperatures and light easterly winds.

The Science:   Two warm fronts tracking in from the SW will collide with the cold air streaming in from the NE right along the crest of the mountains.  This will keep the snow falling into tomorrow morning.  Light scattered snow showers will slowly taper off tomorrow as the low pressure system tracks away from the region.

4-7day Long Range:   The middle of the week will trend dry and warmer with another system forming over the region by the end of the week.

MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0900 Saturday

The Snapshot:  The snow machine is not done yet.  Snow will continue to fall in the mountains through at least Tuesday.  Cool easterly flow will keep freezing levels well below 4000’ into the start of the new week.

The Science:   The weak high pressure that formed off of the coast did obstruct the general flow pattern by shifting the jet stream south.  But, a low pressure system developing in the Gulf of Alaska will spin more storms into the Cascade Mountains starting today.  These following systems are not as potent with colder temperatures and light (east) winds, but will produce some measurable snow during the next few days.

4-7day Long Range: The cold arctic air mass dropping into the center of the country will usher in colder air for the next 2-6 days.  This mixed with the low pressure system churning in the Gulf of Alaska will keep the snow flying through at least the middle of next week.
