January Totals

What a month it was! Here are some totals:

-Total snowfall at Schmidt Haus (base area):  209” according to DOT who does the manual obs there.

This is the 4^th highest January total since records began in 1951, the highest since the record January in 1990 (242”), and the 8^th highest single month all time at Stevens. The average for January is 107”.

-Total snowfall at Brooks (mid mountain): 256”. Definitely the most snow recorded there since that study plot was built in 2015. Unfortunately we don’t have a similar POR for mid-mountain stations at Stevens Pass as we do for the base area.

-Total precipitation: 28.7” as measured by the Snotel site managed by the NCRS.

This is the record January precipitation recorded at this site since it began reporting in 1979, and is 200% of the average!

-We did 11 days of avalanche control, and used 980 explosives.
