The Forecast:
Mostly sunny and calm today. Increasing clouds and light to moderate snow
Thursday.
The Science: Yesterday
afternoon’s upper level NW flow has been cutoff by the high pressure ridge
building and moving inland this morning. Thus, the west winds have died down
and skies have cleared over the crest. Today should be a quiet day as the ridge
drifts over the PNW. A low pressure system in NW flow approaches tomorrow,
beginning to impact the area Thursday night. Freezing levels are favorable, although the
amount of moisture isn’t particularly impressive. A brief convergence zone may
set up Thursday night.
Long Range: After a brief lull Friday
afternoon, zonal flow brings a stronger system on Saturday morning. This will
have better orographic forcing and much more associated moisture. Freezing
levels will start out just below Pass level and should fall Saturday night and
Sunday. This event should be good for 1.5-2 feet of snow over the holiday weekend.
Confidence: Good
for the next 36 hours.
