MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0630 Friday

The Snapshot: Light passing showers with rising temperatures today; rain switching to snow with wind tonight.  Warm and dry weather begins on Sunday.

The Science:   A weak warm front will push through the region today followed by a strong cold front tonight.  Freezing levels will peak near 5000’ this afternoon and then quickly fall in the wake of the cold front.  The main moisture event is associated with the leading edge of the cold front, so the rain, if any, will be short-lived.  Snow intensifies with westerly flow (convergence) late tonight into early tomorrow morning.   The moisture will dissipate tomorrow afternoon as high pressure build up from the south.

The Long Range:  A very warm, dry and stable air mass will begin to lift north along the west coast on Sunday.  Clear weather with daytime temperatures possibly reaching into the 50’s can be expected on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Trend and Timing:
Light mixed rain and snow showers today with rain switching to moderate snow after 4 pm.  Snow tapers off tomorrow afternoon.

Weak easterly flow will shift westerly with the passing of the cold front tonight.  Strong westerly winds can be anticipated through the night.
