Time and Day: 0630 Saturday
The Snapshot: Cool today with very light snow flurries, warming temperatures and moderate snow Sunday, increasing snow and temperatures by Monday morning.
The Science: The surface high pressure sagging out of BC and associated cold air pool will start to drift east today as the jet stream begins to shift towards Washington again. This morning the cold air is still in place with 7 degrees in the base area, and 20 degree temperatures across the Puget Sound.
As upper and mid-level winds shift from northerly around the compass rose to westerly throughout the day today and overnight, a temperate airmass will begin to move into the area from the Pacific. This will bring light snow and a return to typical Pacific Northwest temperatures by Sunday morning. A warm front will enter the forecast area Sunday night/Monday morning bringing heavy snow and warmer temperatures.
The Long Range: Rapidly rising freezing levels (to 3,000' or so), strong SW winds, and heavy precip will make for a stormy day on Monday. There will be a brief break Monday evening before the next, warmer front arrives in SW flow aloft Tuesday morning. There will be a spike in freezing levels to Pass level, hopefully no higher, with this system. Storm totals for Monday and Tuesday are looking to be in the 18-24" range. Wednesday currently looks dry, with another snow producer taking shape for Thursday. Happy Holidays!
