MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0700 Thursday

The Snapshot:  Cold and breezy today with snow developing tonight.  Winter storm action begins tomorrow and continues through the weekend.

Warning:  Wind chill temperatures will feel like -10o to -15o today.

The Science:  The winter storm(s) developing off the PNW coast will spin the first band of moisture into the mountains tonight.   Stiff, cold east winds will strengthen today with snow arriving after sunset. The associated low-pressure cell is expected to stall a bit offshore before it makes it push tomorrow. Therefore, snow will be moderate to light and then intensify tomorrow night into Saturday morning. The flow pattern will remain easterly through most of tomorrow with warm air advection slowly eroding the cold air along the eastern slopes.   Once the flow shifts SW late tomorrow night or early Saturday morning the freezing levels will rise to 3000’ or 3500’ along with heavy snow.  The timing for all this is tricky, but expect the heaviest period of  snow late Friday night into Saturday.

Storm totals from 4pm today through 4am Sunday = 1-2” water, 12-24” of snow.   New storm totals will be calculated later today.

Long Range:  The snow ends on Sunday with another cold, dry airmass arriving early next week.

Precipitation Ending at 4am:

Today 24hr water = .25 Snow = 2-4

Tomorrow’s 24hr water =  .5-.75 snow = 5-8
