MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0700 Friday

The Snapshot:  Warmer with heavy snow and wind for the weekend.

The Science:  3” of snow fell overnight with consistent gusty easterly winds.  The snow will intensify today as the low pressure system tracks into southern Canada over the next 12-24hrs.  As the trough moves east of the region, westerly flow and warm air convection will take over.  This will erode the east flow and enhance the snow fall.  Freezing levels will slowly rise but only to around 3000’ or so.

There will be a brief break in the precipitation early tomorrow morning before the next wave of moisture enters the mountains.  Strong westerly flow with PS Convergences developing will keep the snow machine cranking through Sunday.

The Long Range:  This amazing storm cycle that we have enjoyed since November will come to an end next week.  Models have a large high pressure system developing in the Gulf of Alaska.  This will allow a cold, dry airmass to descend into the region.  Therefore, expect most of next week to be dry, cold and clear.

Precipitation Ending at 4am:

Today 24hr water = .75-1 Snow = 8-12

Tomorrow’s 24hr water = .75-1  snow = 8-12

Trend and Timing:
Snow intensifies today.  Westerly flow tonight and tomorrow will provide periods of good orographics and thus heavy snow showers.

24hr temperature ending at 4 am tomorrow:

Low: 10    High: 24
Freezing level: 0- 3000’

Trend and Timing:
Temperatures will slowly rise today with freezing levels peaking near 3000’ tomorrow.  Cooler air fills in on Sunday.

24hr Winds (mph) ending at 4 am tomorrow:
Base:  0-10 E
Ridge Top: 5-10 E

Trend and Timing:
East flow will ease and eventually shift westerly sometime overnight.
