MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0630 Tuesday

The Snapshot:  This cold, clear and breezy weather will continue for most of the remaining week.   A change to warmer and wetter weather is expected to begin over the weekend.

The Science:  Temperatures will climb to a balmy 12-150 today as the cold air mass settles in.  Gusty ridge top and down slope (western slopes) winds will strengthen today as pressure gradients tighten over the next 12-24hrs.   This cold air is a result of what is known as the Frazer River outflow effect:  Cold arctic air streaming into eastern Washington from the Canadian Frazer River valley.  Low pressure to the south and the high pressure stuck in Gulf of Alaska is responsible for the increased pressure gradients and thus the breezy gap winds.

The end of the week will be slightly warmer and less windy as the gradients ease and warmer marine air tries to make its way into the mix.

The Long Range:   A change to warmer and wetter weather begins over the weekend with the next winter storm developing off of NW coast.
