MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0700 Wednesday

The Snapshot:  It is clear and 120 for the first morning of February.  Sunshine, cool temperature and breezy winds can be expected at Stevens Pass today.  Moderate to heavy snow can be anticipated for the weekend.

The Science:  A cold, dry airmass from our neighbors to the north has arrived.  Strong offshore flow will produce gusty easterly winds along the ridge tops, as well as down the western slopes.

Clouds will increase tomorrow in response the storm system tracking up the coast.  Warm, moist air will drive up the western side of the mountains while the cold air gets trapped in the eastern basin.  We all know this game; inversion temperatures with rain to the west and cold east flow producing snow at Stevens Pass.   This is also a formula for freezing rain on the roads.

The Long Range: Prepare for a snowy weekend with a foot or more of snow possible throughout.  Weekend storm totals will be dialed in tomorrow.   Active weather continues into the first full week of February.
