Mountain Weather Forecast

Time and Day: 0730 Saturday

The Snapshot: Light snow today, mostly dry and cloudy Sunday morning with another shot of light snow Sunday afternoon.

The Science: The healing began yesterday morning with 2” of cream cheese and a beautiful sunny day. Light precipitation (snow) began again around 5am this morning in weak southerly flow aloft. Easterly flow through the Pass and a generally cooler mass of air should maintain snow levels below pass level through the next two days. As a weak low pressure trough approaches Washington State, bands of moisture will rotate around it bringing light snow showers over the next 48 hours to Stevens Pass.

A larger, deeper low pressure trough should approach the PNW during the day Monday. Increasing SW flow aloft will bring strengthening alpine winds and moderate snow Monday night and Tuesday morning. Freezing levels should come right up to 4,000’ Monday night, but with a little luck we should have a nice shot of snow by Tuesday morning. Thankfully freezing rain is not in the equation this time. Look for snow totals tomorrow.

The Long Range: Next week brings active weather with Washington under the influence of a large scale trough. Cool temps and embedded west flow should bring a decent snow event Tuesday and Wednesday. There’s a brief break in the action Wednesday afternoon and more snow to finish the week.
