MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0700 Thursday

The Snapshot:  A beautiful sunrise with mountain alpenglow greets the day with clouds moving in later. Snow arrives tomorrow and continues through the weekend.   

The Science:  Cold (currently 60 f) temperatures with gusty easterly winds will continue today.   Clouds begin to move in later this afternoon in response to the strong low-pressure storm system approaches the region from the SW.

The embedded warm front is expected to pass over the mountain early tomorrow morning, bringing with it, rising freezing levels and moderate precipitation.   Snow should begin around 4 am tomorrow with strong east flow holding surface temperatures below freezing.   Steady snowfall is expected through most of the weekend with high freezing levels (4-5000’) to the west battling the colder air to the east.  Watch out for the freezing rain potential.   Storm totals below.

The Long Range:   Another strong pulse of warm SW air will move in on Sunday.  This could briefly push freezing levels up to 5000’ with a short period of rain possible late Sunday.   A cold front follows Monday morning which will allow snow showers and lowering freezing levels to start the new week.

Today 24hr water = lt .25 Snow = 1-2
Tomorrow’s 24hr water = .75-1  snow = 8-12

Trend and Timing:
Snow arrives early tomorrow morning and intensifies through the day.   Storm totals from 4 am tomorrow through 4 am Sunday could exceed 2’ of snow.

Freezing level: 500’ -  3000’

Trend and Timing:   
Freezing levels will reach 3000’ west of the crest early tomorrow morning.  Cold east flow will keep surface temperatures well below freezing through tomorrow.

Ridge Top: 10-15 E

Trend and Timing:
Strong easterly winds will continue along the ridge tops today.  The generally flow aloft shift southerly with the arrival of tomorrow frontal system.
