MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0630 Friday.

The Snapshot:  Let the snow games begin, and may the odds be ever in our favor.   Snow has begun to fall at Stevens Pass and will increase through the weekend.

The Science:  This morning's radar has the advertised frontal systems to the south and still off the Oregon coast.  Bands of moisture ahead of the front have begun to enter the region and will continue to move NE as the day progresses.    The snow will be relatively light today as the front slowly tracks toward the region over the next 24hrs.  As the system makes its way northeast, it will tap into a long fetch of moisture strung out to the SW, this will increasing the precipitation intensity tomorrow and again on Sunday.

Models do have the east flow being overtaken by strong WSW flow tomorrow which, if happens, will push freezing levels to near 4000’ and increase the orographics (snowfall).  A cold front swings in late tomorrow night which will shift the steady snow to intermittent shower and drop the freezing levels for Sunday.

The Long Range:  Snow continues with low temperatures into Monday.  Sounds like a great formula for an amazing powder.   Tuesday and Wednesday will relatively quiet with another similar event taking shape for the second half of next week.

Precipitation Ending at 4am:
Today 24hr water =  .5-.75 Snow = 5-8
Tomorrow’s 24hr water = +1 snow = 10-14

Trend and Timing:
Light to moderate snow today with the main show happening tomorrow.

24hr temperature ending at 4 am tomorrow:
Low:  12   High: 20
Freezing level: 500’ – 3500’

Trend and Timing:
East flow will keep surface temperatures low through tomorrow morning.  Freezing levels inch up to near 3-3500’ by days end tomorrow.

24hr Winds (mph) ending at 4 am tomorrow:
Base:  0-10 E
Ridge Top:  5-15 E shifting SW

Trend and Timing:
Easterly winds will continue to hold in there through early tomorrow morning.  5000’ winds shift SW early tomorrow morning.
