MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day: 0630 Friday

Note: The Pass is closed at the moment with hopes of opening for night skiing.

The Snapshot:  Mixed rain and snow will be the weather game through the weekend. Warmer temps with rain expected for the first half of the new week.

The Science:  7” of snow was swallowed up by 1.55” of rain last night as the low-pressure system moved into southern BC.  Left behind are gusty westerly winds, temperatures around 320f  and mixed rain and snow.

The precipitation will diminish later today as a weak high pressure ridge ahead of the next frontal system develops.  The high pressure ridge will allow a bit of cooling tonight, but that will be short-lived as the next warm front pushes freezing levels back up tomorrow afternoon.  Freezing levels will bounce between 4000’ and 5000’ as this next system moves in; therefore, expect a similar event tomorrow; snow changing to rain.

The Long Range:   Next week will start out rainy with another storm on Monday and then again on Wednesday.  Freezing levels will be 6-7000’ for the first half of the week.

24hr Precipitation ending at 4am:
Today 24hr water = .25-.5  snow = 1-3
Tomorrow’s 24hr water = .5-.75  snow = 2-5

Trend and Timing:
Waves of snow followed by rain showers will continue through the weekend.

24hr temperature ending at 4 am:
Low:  28   High: 34
Freezing level: 4000’-5000’

Trend and Timing:
Freezing levels will bounce between 4k and 5k as these fronts move through over next few days.

24hr Winds (mph) ending at 4 am:
Base: 5-10 WSW
Ridge Top: 5-15 WSW gusty

Trend and Timing:
Gusty WSW winds will accompany the fronts as they come and go.  Some periods of weak east flow will also be possible.
