MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day:  0715 Saturday

The Snapshot: Light snow showers today, ending Sunday morning. Clearing and cool Sunday.

Current Observations:  4” of low(er) density snow overnight. Currently partly cloudy with calm winds. RH is 100% at Brooks and temperatures are in the mid 20’s.

The Science: The final low pressure system of the week is off the WA/OR coast this morning. It will move ashore today and cross directly over Washington. It won’t pack much of a punch for the Central and North Cascades. Stevens Pass should squeeze a few inches of snow out of it, but significant accumulations are unlikely. High pressure begins building over the west coast Sunday morning, with skies clearing and upper level flow becoming dry and northerly. Sunday should be a cooler day.

The Long Range:  The ridge of high pressure that begins to build Sunday will gain strength early next week. By Tuesday freezing levels should rise, reaching 7,000’ or higher. The ridge looks to remain in place for much of next week for dry, mild weather.

Trend and Timing:
Light east flow will develop midday Saturday as the low pressure center approaches Stevens Pass, then switch back to WNW overnight and Sunday morning.
