Mountain Weather Forecast

Time and Day: 0615 Saturday

The Snapshot: Light snow ending today, moderate snow Sunday.

Observations: Temperatures have risen to 32 degrees across the mountain this morning. 1” of snow mid-mountain with a rain/snow mix not providing any accumulation in the base area. Winds are from the SW and generally light, with the RH at 95%. The barometer is steady at 1016.

The Science: The easterly flow and upper level warm air mass that provided the freezing rain event yesterday has thankfully moved on. A low pressure trough is moving over Washington today bringing cooler air and some light snow showers as high pressure builds behind it. Showers will end Saturday afternoon as the high pressure transits the region.

The next storm system enters the picture Sunday, with a trough digging southward in the Pacific. As it digs a front will move onshore during the day and stall. There is a southwesterly upper level component to this so temperatures will rise Sunday afternoon. Precip type during the day Sunday currently looks to start out as snow, with the possibility of a rain/snow mix in the base area Sunday afternoon. Snow amounts will be consistent throughout the day in the light-moderate range.

The Long Range: Things dry out a bit Monday as the elongated and weakened front moves on to the east. A series of low pressure troughs move through the PNW next week for continued active weather. Stay tuned as details emerge.
