Mountain Weather Forecast

Time and Day:  0715 Sunday

The Snapshot:   Light to moderate snow today with a warming trend, dry on Monday with partly cloudy skies.

Current Observations:  26 degrees on the upper mountain and 30 in the base area with light westerly winds. Light snow has just begun to fall. RH is 94% and the barometer has dropped a few ticks in the past 6 hours.

The Science:   Things are playing out as expected this morning with an elongated trough out in the Pacific digging southward. This is driving southwesterly upper level flow and a warm front towards Washington State. The weak high pressure ridge has flattened and is moving east, pushing most of the associated moisture into the northern half of Washington. An offshore pressure gradient is forecast to develop which would drive easterly flow through the Cascade passes, even though winds are currently from the west. Free air freezing levels should rise to around 5,500’ Sunday night, but east flow should be in place for most of the time period that we receive precip which would ideally fall as snow.

On Monday the trough becomes a cut-off low dropping towards California with surface high pressure developing over the PNW. Monday should be dry during the daylight hours with another trough in westerly flow moving over the area Monday night and Tuesday for another shot of light to moderate snow at lowering freezing levels.

The Long Range: The trickle in continues Wednesday with a few inches of snow possible at 2,000-3,000 freezing levels. Thursday/Friday currently looks promising with potential for a genuine snow event setting up.
