Mountain Weather Forecast

Time and Day: 0710 Sunday

The Snapshot: Light snow showers, mostly cloudy, and benign temperatures today and tomorrow.

The Science

Current Observations:  Light snow started overnight, with a trace on the ground. Temperatures are typical for mid-March with 26 degrees on the upper mountain and 30 in the base area. Winds are light to moderate on ridge tops from the west. The barometer climbed slightly yesterday and is holding steady around 1013 millibars.

The Forecast: A large scale, but weak low pressure center is situated over Northern Oregon/Washington this morning. It will remain relatively stationary today and begin to drift south overnight. It should become an open trough by Monday and basically cease to exist. In the meantime, it will spin very light bands of moisture through the Cascades and draw relatively cool air into our region. Snow showers should end Monday morning.

The Long Range: Tuesday looks to bring a short-lived high pressure ridge, for a mostly sunny and warm day. An elongated trough forms in the Pacific on Wednesday, driving southerly flow into the forecast area. Increasing clouds Tuesday night and Wednesday are likely, with moisture entering the region Wednesday afternoon. Freezing levels initially look high, 5-6,000’, but lower significantly by Friday.
