MOUNTAIN WEATHER FORECAST

Time and Day:  0700 Monday

The Snapshot:  Mixed rain and snow this morning with a short dry period tonight.  Heavy snow changing to rain tomorrow.

The Science

Current Observations: 1.36” of water that equated to around  5” of snow, fell overnight, the temperature is 32f, the barometer is 1001mb and falling, ridge top winds are 5-10mph out of the WSW.  Radar shows the back edge of this system just entering the Olympic Range with mixed rain and snow falling at the Passes.

A cold front will swing through today which will keep the moisture falling and usher in some cooler air. Westerly flow will fill in behind the front which could enhance snowfall for a few hours this afternoon.  Tonight will be cool and dry with some partial clearing under a weak high pressure ridge.

The Thanksgiving Storm:  As advertised, a strong, warm SW fetch of moisture enters the region tomorrow for a Pineapple Express event.  ** East flow development could (or not) allow the start of this storm to be heavy snow with possibly some significant accumulation. The warm air streaming up from the south will eventually take over with freezing levels soaring to 8000’  tonight.   Freezing levels will remain well above 5000’ through Thanksgiving day.

Storm totals could exceed 4” of water from Tuesday 4 am through Thursday 4 pm.

The Long Range:  Cooler NW flow saves the day on Friday with freezing levels dropping back down to Pass level and snow likely for the weekend.

24hr Precipitation ending at 4am:
Today 24hr water: .75 snow: 4-8
Tomorrow’s 24hr water: 1-1.5  snow: 6-10

Trend and Timing:
Totals could increase due to a possible Puget Sound Convergence zone development later today.  The precipitation will begin to taper off after 4 pm with tonight being mostly dry.   Heavy snow will slowly change to rain through the day tomorrow.

24hr temperature ending at 4 am:
Low: 26    High: 32

Trend and Timing:
