Time and Day: 0900 Tuesday
The Snapshot:
Windy with mixed rain and snow changing
to heavy rain is on the holiday menu.
The Science
Current Observations: Mixed rain and snow is
beginning to fall at Stevens Pass, .48” of water with 2-4” of new snow fell
yesterday, the temperature is 32f, the RH is 95%, the barometer bummed up to 1017mb, and the winds are +-10mph and out of the east.
A strong warm front, entraining heaps of moisture, will lift up through the region today. There is a pocket of cool air nestled along
the eastern slope between Glacier Peak and Stevens Pass. This could provide some east flow insulation
with some good snow accumulation in that region. Stevens Pass is on the southern boundary of
the cool air so time will tell if the resort will receive much if any of that
effect.
Warm southerly flow will
eventually override the cool air and push freezing levels to near 8000’ late
this afternoon. Heavy rain will fall
through the night and begin to shift to showers tomorrow. Another push of heavy rain moves in early
Thursday morning.
The Long Range: This very active weather pattern with
fluctuating freezing levels and heavy
precipitation will continue for the next 7-10 days. Long range models differ greatly on specific
details; so temperatures and precipitation quantities heading into the weekend
are in question.
