March 31, 2009

Start Time Wednesday-7:30am

5" new snow at 5:00am, no wind. Wind started at 6:00am out of the west with 5" additional snow. At 7:00am a Groomer reported piss point cat triggered to skid road. I got in at 10 min after 7 from putting the new charges away, jumped on the snomo and grabed 2 cases and punched. Between 7 and 7:30am lots of naturals. 8:00am-9:00am explosives and ski cut releases, real sensitive. 9:30am lock down. Its March

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/31/2009 Weather Discussion: The storms have slowed just a touch, but they will still be good snow producers. There will be a break tonight before the next similar system arrives tomorrow. Long-term models show a high-pressure cell building off the coast later in the week. This may split or push the NW flow north. For now, the weekend is looking drier and warmer. Forecast from Tuesday 4pm to Wednesday 4am Precipitation .25 in. Water 2-4 in. Snow Temperatures Low 24 High 26 Winds 5-10 W Forecast for Wednesday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .25 in. Water 2-4 in. Snow Temperatures Low 24 High 30 Winds 5-10 W TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: The snow will slowly taper to showers tonight and then pick back up again tomorrow afternoon. The next storm has very similar characteristics as today’s system, so we could see another foot or so by Thursday. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will trend down to 1000’ tonight and then rise back up to near pass level tomorrow night. Winds: The winds should also taper today after the cold front moves east. We should expect a similar wind story with the next storm as well.

March 30, 2009

Start Time 6:15am Tues. 3/31/09

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/30/2009 Weather Discussion: Two distinct storms will bring another round of snow to the mountains for the upcoming week. One storm will hit tonight and then another on Wednesday. Should be another good week of skiing. Long-term models insist on keeping NW storms heading our way well into next week. However, there are some hits of some changes by the weekend- long way out, so I will leave that alone for now. Forecast from Monday 4pm to Tuesday 4am Precipitation .75 in. Water 6-10 in. Snow Temperatures Low 26 High 30 Winds 10-20 W Forecast for Tuesday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .25+ in. Water 3-5 in. Snow Temperatures Low 26 High 30 Winds 5-15 NW TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Should start seeing flakes after noon today. Snow will intensify overnight and continue through tomorrow. Our convergence friend will also play a nice role tonight before it shifts its attention to the southern Cascades tomorrow. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will trend up today to reach 3500’. (could inch up a bit higher than that) A cold front from the NW will drop freezing levels back below 1000’ by tomorrow night. Winds: A strong NW jet centered over the PNW will continue to bring burdensome winds through this storm cycle. Expect 40+ mph winds from midnight through the morning. Wind will shift NW tomorrow afternoon and then should taper as well.

March 28, 2009

Start Time 6:15am Sunday 3/30/09

Not sure what is really going to happen... This storm could possibly go south of us. Always easier to call off, than on. Hope to see you bright and early. Patty

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/28/2009 Weather Discussion: Looks like most of the energy of the approaching storm is driving south, thus, snow totals have been downgraded for Stevens Pass. The winds will be the main weather feature to pay attention to tonight. A drying trend will begin tomorrow as high pressure briefly builds over the region. Long-term models show the high-pressure ridge passing Monday, allowing another disturbance to track through the PNW late Monday or early Tuesday. There are still several storms embedded in a NW flow pattern that will continue to track cool storms through the PNW through the week and possible beyond. Forecast from Saturday 4pm to Sunday 4am Precipitation .25+ in. Water 4-6 in. Snow Temperatures Low 20 High 30 Winds 15-30 NW gusty Forecast for Sunday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .25 in. Water 1-3 in. Snow Temperatures Low 16 High 24 Winds 5-15 NW tapering TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Light to moderate snow will continue through to night and then taper off by noon or so tomorrow. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will plummet to sea level tonight as a strong cold front quickly moves through. Freezing levels will recover some tomorrow, but stay unseasonable low through Monday. Winds: Models are showing 40-50mph NW winds heading in tonight. The action should start after 7pm and last through the night. We don’t often get these types of strong winds from this direction, so I am curious to see how the mountains will influence or shelter the Pass.

March 27, 2009

Start Time Saturday-7:30am

Looks like the storms are stacking up for this coming week. New snow brings skiers, skiers bring work hours. Maybe will reach average snowfall by mid April.

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/27/2009 Weather Discussion: Light snow showers will persist today before several pulses of energy push through the mountains over the weekend. This will bring a sporty weekend of snow, wind and fluctuating temperatures. Long-term models show no end in the storms stacked out in the North Pacific heading our way. I guess the March lion ate the lamb. Forecast from Friday 4pm to Saturday 4am Precipitation .10 in. Water 0-2 in. Snow Temperatures Low 22 High 30 Winds 5-10 W Forecast for Saturday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .25-.5 in. Water 4-6 in. Snow Temperatures Low 22 High 28 Winds 5-10 WSW TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: The snow will lighten up tonight and then pick up again tomorrow. The main energy of this storm is not expected to hit Stevens until tomorrow night. Storm totals are currently calculation out to be around 1-1.5” of water or around +-20” of snow when it briefly comes to an end Sunday. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will trend down from 3500’ today to 1500’ by tomorrow morning and then quickly rebound during the day. A strong cold front will then drop freezing levels to near sea level on Sunday. Winds: Westerly convergence flow will persist tonight. Wind will then taper and briefly shift SW as the next wave moves in. Models are showing a big wind event Saturday night/Sunday morning with gust as high as 60mph. So we will have to keep a close eye on that potential.

March 26, 2009

Start Time Friday-7:30am

The heli mission on Susan Jane was succesful in the fact the weather was perfect and all charges detonated. If you have any photos I would like to compile with snow profiles. Seem this would be a good story for the Sweet Spot theiry. Clay found it.

March 25, 2009

Start Time Thursday-7:30am

Epic powder day today. Powder hounds tired by 11:00am. Shooting Susan Jane on Thursday between 8 and 10:00am

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/25/2009 Weather Discussion: Last night’s wonderful storm (12"new) will drift south today bringing an end to the snow. High pressure will produce dry weather tonight and tomorrow. Might even have a blue bird day tomorrow. Long-term models show a series of weather systems once again taking aim at the PNW starting Friday. Details to come. Forecast from Wednesday 4pm to Thursday 4am Precipitation 0 in. Water 0 in. Snow Temperatures Low 18 High 26 Winds 0-5 N Forecast for Thursday 4am to 4pm Precipitation 0 in. Water 0 in. Snow Temperatures Low 18 High 32 Winds 0-5 E TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: The snow should be all over by mid afternoon. Brief high pressure will keep the next 24 hours dry. Freezing levels: Clearing skies will allow surface temps to dip pretty low tonight. Freezing levels will slowly rise to 3000’ tonight and then a bit higher on Friday. Winds: Winds will taper today and then swing north than east overnight. Westerly’s will return on Friday.

March 24, 2009

Start Time Thursday 6:15am

Hell of a March so far. See you in the morning. Tentative plan to shoot Susan Jane Thursday morning.

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/24/2009 Weather Discussion: Our nice winter storm is right on schedule. Snow will continue through the night. High pressure will push north tomorrow afternoon ending the precipitation. Long-term models show a drying trend for Thursday and Friday. There is not much agreement in the models beyond Friday, so I will wait to get a better fix for the weekend. Forecast from Tuesday 4pm to Wednesday 4am Precipitation 1 in. Water 10-14 in. Snow Temperatures Low 24 High 30 Winds 10-20 W gusty Forecast for Wednesday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .25 in. Water 2-4 in. Snow Temperatures Low 20 High 24 Winds 5-10 NW tapering TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Convergence flow has just kicked in, this will drive good orographics for the next 12-24hrs. Depending on the convergence intensity and duration the snow totals could be higher – could be another great Stevens pow day. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will trend down tonight to near sea level. Freezing levels will then slowly rise to near pass level by Thursday morning. Winds: Winds will also ramp up today bringing gusty periods through the night. Could see gust +40mph through the night. Winds will taper and swing north than east by Thursday morning. Winds: Winds will also ramp up today bringing gusty periods through the night. Could see gust +40mph through the night. Winds will taper and swing north than east by Thursday morning. Watch that wind slab and cornice development.

March 23, 2009

Start Time 6:15am Tues. 3/23/09

Could be interesting!!!

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/23/2009 Weather Discussion: A strong NW flow pattern will push several pulses of moisture into the north central Cascades for the first part of the week -this will be a nice snow producer for Stevens Pass. Long-term models show it all coming to an end on Thursday as high pressure temporarily brings dry and more spring like weather to the mountains. Forecast from Monday 4pm to Tuesday 4am Precipitation .25 in. Water 2-5 in. Snow Temperatures Low 28 High 30 Winds 0-5 SW Forecast for Tuesday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .5 in. Water 4-8 in. Snow Temperatures Low 28 High 30 Winds 10-20 gusty TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Light snow should begin this afternoon and then slowly ramp up as convergence conditions develop. Water equivalent storm totals are still calculating out to be 2-4” by the end of Wednesday. My sense is that it will be on the lower end of that, but still a good amount. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will drop below 1000’ today, their lowest mark. Freezing levels will then slowly rise reaching 3000’ by 4am. Temperatures should hold steady through tomorrow before a cold front pushed in from the north on Wednesday. Winds: Winds won’t be much of a factor until the convergence zone develops early tomorrow morning. We can expect strong westerly flow conditions to continue through this storm cycle.

March 22, 2009

Start Time 7:30am Mon 3/23/09

More Winter is on it's way!!!

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/22/2009 Weather Discussion: I guess winter will win the game this week. A cold front will move through today, only to be followed by another stronger front tomorrow. This will set up conditions to bring another round of heavy snow to the Cascades for the first half of the week. Long-term models show some potential for drying starting in the second half of the week, due to that large high-pressure cell building off the coast of California. This is way too far out to have much confidence in, so we will have to wait and see. In the mean time, enjoy the snow. Forecast from Sunday 4pm to Monday 4am Precipitation .25 in. Water 2-4 in. Snow Temperatures Low 22 High 32 Winds 5-15 W gusty Forecast for Monday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .25 in. Water 2-4 in. Snow Temperatures Low 22 High 30 Winds 5-10 W TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Light snow showers will develop this evening and slowly taper off overnight. Snow will re-develop again tomorrow afternoon. Then things really get interesting as our friend the Puget Sound Convergence Zone kicks in. The storm totals for the next 72 hours are currently showing 2-4” of water. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will trend down tonight reaching 1500’ by 4am. Freezing levels will then rebound to 3000’ in the wake of the warm front tomorrow. Freezing levels should hover in the 3-4k range through Wednesday. Winds: Winds will also begin to make a presence as these fronts move through. A steady breeze will blow tonight and then tapering off early tomorrow morning. Winds will then ramp up with the passing of the warm front late Sunday or early Monday morning.

March 21, 2009

Start Time 7:30am Sunday 3/22/09

Beautiful first day of spring. Looks like we could be starting the classic spring cycle of frozen in the mornings and slush in the afternoon. That faceted layer is still looming on the northerly aspects. We are finding it anywhere from 180-215 cm down. Seems it has a dense bridge of rounds above it though. Be interesting to see what finally happens with it.

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/21/2009 Weather Discussion: This beautiful sunny weather should continue today, courtesy of an upper level trough that has stalled off the coast. The low is expected to gain traction tomorrow, bringing thickening clouds and light snow to the Cascades. Long-term models show a strong front pushing in on Monday- this could bring another round of accumulating snow for Monday/Tuesday. Longer-range models show high pressure strengthening off the California coast during the week-interesting. I am not sure what long range affect this will have on our weather, but for now, it will produce NW flow, keeping active weather moving through the PNW for most of next week. Forecast from Saturday 4pm to Sunday 4am Precipitation 0 in. Water 0 in. Snow Temperatures Low 20 High 38 Winds 0-5 SW Forecast for Sunday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .10 in. Water 1-2 in. Snow Temperatures Low 20 High 32 Winds 0-5 WSW TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Dry conditions will persist through the night. There is still some instability lurking over the crest so an afternoon shower or two could be possible. Light snow should show up after noon tomorrow. Freezing levels: The sun will push up surface temps into the low 40’s today and then cool off quickly as the sun sets. Freezing levels will linger near pass levels and then slowly trend down to reach 3000’ by tomorrow evening. Freezing levels should stay below pass level through mid week. Winds: Light SW flow will slowly swing westerly tomorrow.

March 20, 2009

Start time 7:30am Sat. 3/21/09

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/20/2009 Weather Discussion: I think spring is trying to bust a move on winter. A cold front will move in today dropping temps and pushing more bands of moisture into the PNW tonight. Long-term models show light passing snow showers with sun breaks for the weekend. A warm front approaching will bring more moisture and temperatures back to seasonal norms by the middle of next week. Forecast from Friday 4pm to Saturday 4am Precipitation .25 in. Water 2-4 in. Snow Temperatures Low 20 High 34 Winds 0-10 SE Forecast for Saturday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .10 in. Water trace in. Snow Temperatures Low 20 High 32 Winds 0-10 SW TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: We can expect sun breaks with passing rain/snow showers today. It will be possible to get a burst of snow with some enhanced orographics with the arrival of the front tonight. The weekend should be more on the dry side, with some light snow showers possible. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will stick around the 4-5000’ level today before they start to fall in response the approaching cold front. Freezing levels should dip below pass level this evening and settle around +-3000’ for the weekend. Winds: Southerly flow, which will actually push through the pass from the east, will persist through the next few days. We will get some wind shifts with some gust as the front passes through, but there shouldn’t be much wind to deal with.

March 19, 2009

Start Time-Friday-7:30am

Our warmup looks like it should last through tommorow afternoon. Today we are seeing surface activity off Cowboy with small, soft slabs running natural. Warmer up higher, colder down low. The surface slides are not producing much as far as deposition--yet. Will see what tommorow brings.

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/19/2009 Weather Discussion: Light snow/rain today with rising freezing levels. A cold front approaching will enhance the precipitation at times. This complex weather pattern will bring a mixed bag of features through the weekend. Long-term models show the low-pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska stalling, this tends to weaken and split the approaching storms. The weekend is look more like scattered snow showers with sun breaks. I don’t have a whole lot of confidence in the models at this point, so we will have to wait and see. Forecast from Thursday 4pm to Friday 4am Precipitation .25+ in. Water 1-3 in. Snow Temperatures Low 34 High 36 Winds 0-5 SW Forecast for Friday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .25+ in. Water 1-3 in. Snow Temperatures Low 34 High 36 Winds 0-10 SW TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: These systems have a distinct band pattern to them, so there will be periods of moderate precip and then some breaks. The snow is expected to change to rain below 4500’ this afternoon and then turn back to snow after the cold front moves through late tomorrow. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will trend up from 4000’ today to 5500’ overnight. The snow levels should hover somewhere in between through most of tomorrow. Freezing levels will fall below pass level after 4pm tomorrow. Winds: Light SW flow will continue through tomorrow- could see a brief gusty period as the cold front moves closer but nothing significant.

March 18, 2009

Start Time Thursday-7:30am

We have reached the parameters for avalanche potential from the Susan Jane slide path to C-10 and C-11 loading areas. The layer we are watching is 4-6’ under this additional 56” of new snow. We are starting to see natural avalanche activity outside the area with 2-4’ crowns, not running very far at this time. We where going to try and heli-shoot SJ this morning but we did not have a good enough weather window and it dose not look like we will for a while. The weather forecast is for more precip. Through the weekend with temps. Rising between 3000’ and 5000’ with possible rain to about 4500’ Thursday and Friday. With the warming and additional snow load I think we are setting up for a potential big one. We will try and heli-shoot SJ early next week. In the mean time our plan is to monitor the temps. Over the through the weekend. On the Real Time Weather I moved the top temp. from Skyline to the top of Tyemill a little closer to Susan Jane. During the day if the temp at Tymill gets above 27 degrees and rising we will close the hiking route on Gemini, the Gemini trail into the saddle and the Outer Limits road. (Chris Brixey, could we look at options to veer skiers from upper voltage drop to Borealis? Gary, for grooming if the temp gets above 27 degrees and rising I would recommend not to use the Outer Limits road. I think you would be fine if you can climb the last face on Gemini. Shawn make sure Mike Powers gets this message for Nordic operations as I don’t know if he see his e-mail all the time. You can call me anytime on my cell # 206-949-7112 Jon

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/18/2009 Weather Discussion: High pressure centered over Idaho will confine the moisture to the northwest corner of the state today. A low-pressure cell spinning in the Gulf of Alaska will begin spinning bands of moisture in the PNW tomorrow. Long-term models show the low in the Gulf continuing to bring active weather to the PNW through most of next week. Lowering freezing levels expected on Friday bringing more snow for the weekend. Forecast from Wednesday 4pm to Thursday 4am Precipitation Lt .10 in. Water trace in. Snow Temperatures Low 26 High 36 Winds 0-5 SW Forecast for Thursday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .25+ in. Water 2-6 in. Snow Temperatures Low 30 High 36 Winds 0-5 S TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: The precipitation is expected to arrive in the mountains early tomorrow morning. This will most likely be a light rain/snow mixed event. This rain snow game will continue until a cold front changes everything to snow on Friday. Freezing levels: The freezing levels should reach 4000’ feet this afternoon and then fluctuate between 4 and 5k until Friday morning when they will fall in the wake of a cold front. Winds: Light SSW flow will slowly swing West by Friday. The wind will show up again with Friday’s strong cold front.

March 17, 2009

Hey the new snow will be getting heavier. Make sure and be heads up in the back country. Moon Light Bowl has a slid, with 3 to 4' crown. Also, big slide at Baker, Rumble gulley with 15 feet of debrie. Could get interesting around here. Patty

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/17/2009 Weather Discussion: Nice snow eh? High-pressure building to our south will lift the main activity to our north tonight. Looks like a dry day with warmer temperatures tomorrow. Long-term models pick up the action again late tomorrow night. A mixed rain and snow event will be possible on Thursday with a cold front moving in Friday. Longer-range models show active weather continuing well into next week. Forecast from Tuesday 4pm Wednesday 4am Precipitation Lt .10 in. Water 0-2 in. Snow Temperatures Low 22 High 32 Winds 0-10 wsw Forecast for Wednesday 4am to 4pm Precipitation .10 in. Water 0-2 in. Snow Temperatures Low 24 High 36 Winds 0-10 wsw TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Snow will change to shower today and then taper off overnight. The next wave of moisture will arrive early Thursday morning. This is looking like a rain snow mix below 4500’ . Freezing levels: Surface temps will creep up to near freezing today and then fall overnight. Freezing levels will trend up reaching 4500’ by mid afternoon tomorrow. Freezing levels will hover there until the cold front brings cooler air on Friday. Winds: Not much showing up in the wind department. Light WSW flow will be the norm for the rest of the week.

March 14, 2009

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/14/2009 Weather Discussion: Our nice winter storm is right on track. Snow should continue today and then another stronger front will move through again tomorrow. Temperatures should stay on the good side of the freezing mark. Long-term models show active winter weather continuing through most of next week. There are some signs of warmer air from the SW moving in by next weekend. It is March after all. Enjoy the snow. Forecast from Saturday 4pm to Sunday 4am Precipitation .5 in. Water 4-6 in. Snow Temperatures Low 22 High 28 Winds 0-5 SE TRENDS AND TIMING Precipitation: Snow should fall for most of the day. There will be a brief intermission early tomorrow morning before the next wave of moisture enters the mountains tomorrow afternoon. Still looking at impressive storm totals of 2-4” of water by Tuesday. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will trend down from 3000’ today to 1000’ by 4am tomorrow. Freezing levels will spike up in front of tomorrow cold front. The temps should then quickly drop back down in its wake. This spike is timing out to be around midday tomorrow. Winds: So far, the wind models are right on. SE flow will briefly develop in response to tomorrow’s front. Still expecting periods of moderate wind as these fronts come and go. Winds are strengthening associated with tomorrow front so we will have to keep an eye on that.

March 13, 2009

Freezing levels: Freezing levels will trend down from 4000’ today to 3000’ tomorrow and then continue lowering into Sunday. Winds: SW swing to westerly flow will occur overnight. SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/6/2009 Weather Discussion: A low-pressure system sliding down the BC coast will bring a nice winter storm to the Cascades for the weekend. Snow, wind, and cool temps, all great fixings for great powder. Long-term models show active winter weather continuing through most of next week. Freezing levels: Freezing levels will trend up from sea level today to 3000’ by early tomorrow morning. Annoying high winds will blow through most tomorrow.

SPOT WEATHER FORECAST

3/5/2009 Weather Discussion: Snow will taper off today and we may even get a peek at the sun. Tomorrow will be dry and cold. The skiing just keeps getting better and better. Continued settlement in the snow pack, settlement being Loud, wide spread and scary with little avalanche activity. The slab sitting on a faceted layer at around 80cms seems to have lack of cohesion and energy at this time. Tests show little energy and dirty shears. Jon

Weather Note

Hey - Not doing a formal forecast today - day off. But, east flow saved the day again - Yeh. Still expecting freezing levels to rise to 4500' or so today. A stationary low just off the coast will spin bands of moisture into the PNW for the next 34-48 hours - still need to watch the freezing levels right at the pass as well. The climate is in its seasonal shift pattern so it will be a mixed bag of weather until it figures out that it wants to be spring. Have a great day.
